They are different days for Merlía. The new outbreak of her covid-19 takes her away from her classmates and makes her visit the same school now without students, without colors, or bells announcing recess time. The little pioneer arrives every morning at the Félix Varela Morales Elementary School by the hand of her mother, who is also a teacher at the center. From there, Merlía Trujillo Rodríguez receives her teleclasses, while her mother, like the rest of the educators, fulfills her obligations.
Student monitoring and self-preparation are some of the tasks that teachers from Betancourt occupy today. Meeting in the schools of their locality of residence, due to the current complex epidemiological situation, they do not interrupt their mission in an effort to teach.
A DIFFERENT STAGE
María Eugenia Jorrín, director of said institution, explains that as the vice minister said, the course does not stop. Both managers and teachers remain in the centers where they view teleclasses and then send worksheets to students and eradicate each of the difficulties.
"The little ones who cannot receive teleclasses at home, because their mothers work or lack the means, are welcomed in each center," he emphasizes.
Organized by teams, the teachers also receive methodological treatment according to their needs, according to Maday Ucha Camaraza, head of the cycle, who also refers to the support in the activities of the garden and the reception in the school of workers from other educational centers:
"Due to the threat posed by covid-19 due to the increase in cases in the province, local teachers who work in other municipalities participate with us in different activities." Among the workers who are joining this group these days is Vilayda Rivero, a psychopedagogue at the Güira de Macurijes Elementary School, who comments:
“During this stage our work is not interrupted. It is a valuable time to prepare ourselves, create means and perfect the psychopedagogical treatments that we will then apply to our children after they return to the classroom ”.
ENCOURAGE LEARNING
In each corresponding grade, teachers are concerned with student learning at home. Professor Alberto Reyes is one of those examples, offering special attention to a little girl with motor difficulties:
“The first thing I do is watch the teleclass and write down the orientations. As she is a single student, I copy each exercise in case she doesn't have time, and even without answering so that she can do them later ”.
The third grade teacher then prepares a Spanish Language and Mathematics worksheet with the exercises that the pioneer needs. She later takes them home to pick them up days later and show them to the principal or assistant principal.
But the effort that the school year demands today also includes the support of different factors in the community. As Yaramís Rodríguez Rosell, a second grade teacher and Merlía's mother, put it:
“These are complex times, but we must not stop at the present, because there will be a future. Hence the importance of studying and preparing with the help of relatives and neighbors, provided that this return to school is once again successful ”.
